Tesco Initiative Aids Environmental Conservation

Tesco Stores Plc, in partnership with Energy & Environmental Systems Ltd. of London, has completed a program to help reduce CO2 emissions by cutting its consumption of gas for heating and hot water.

Tesco StaffThis has been achieved through the introduction of Energy & Environmental’s systems at a range of locations throughout the retail group. E & E’s systems are intelligent boiler/burner management control systems. They bring together a unique combination of software processes to reduce any unnecessary firing of burners within heating boiler systems by exercising tighter control on the actual boiler temperature within given preprogrammed parameters, ensuring that the boilers fire only when there is a need.

E & E’s systems are British designed and have been saving energy for a wide range of clients for many years. Their systems have been installed in hospitals, hotel groups, schools, local authorities and commercial buildings. Savings of over 20% are not uncommon and E & E’s systems will still make substantial savings even where a building management system (BMS) exists.

Tesco Stores Plc initially tested the E & E systems in March 2003, at its store in Baldock, Hertfordshire. A monitored test over a period of one month demonstrated savings of over 30%. Consumption figures at this store, since the test period, have shown a similar saving of over 30% compared to the same period in 2002.

An initial rollout of over 100 stores followed this successful test result. This programmed was completed before the start of the main heating season and, even after assuming a much lower Tescoestimate of savings than the test result, the entire cost of installations should be recovered before the end of January 2004. All installations were carried out without any disruption to the operation of the store, or to the provision of heating and/or hot water where required.

Tesco Stores - Test Program

The following is a summary of tests conducted to prove the savings achieved by Energy & Environmental’s boiler management systems installed in 450 Tesco Stores. These tests were conducted on an alternative DAY ON, DAY OFF basis. On the DAY ON the heating runs under the control of Energy & Environmental’s system and on the DAY OFF the heating system runs as it was configured before Energy & Environmental’s system was installed. The monitoring measurements include the firing time and the fuel used. These tests were all monitored by Tesco staff.
