The London Borough of Camden is working in partnership with Energy & Environmental Systems Limited (E&ES) to install boiler energy management systems into their major housing blocks within the Borough with the objective of cutting the consumption of gas for heating and hot water and thereby substantially reducing CO2 emissions.
At the start of 2006, the London Borough of Camden undertook a review of all its residential sites as part of a substantial capital investment project. As a result of this review, Camden wished further to increase the Borough’s energy saving capabilities, so asked E&ES to provide a remote diagnostic, control and monitoring system, which increases the efficiency of their management.
So far, E&ES have installed the systems into over 80 blocks of residential flats and they aim to install them in a further 50 blocks. On completion of this programme, it has been calculated that Camden reduces its damaging CO² emissions by approximately 4,000 tonnes per annum.
In order to extend the services provided by Energy & Environmental Systems into other areas, Camden continually monitors the performance of the system utilising the PC Communications, plus independent tests.
For example, an independent energy consultant was appointed to monitor the performance of an system installed in a multi-storey, multi-block residential site. Savings of 25.1% were recorded over a 28 day period, without compromising residents’ comfort levels. This attractive level of savings achieved by the , coupled with the ability of the systems to provide a comprehensive remote, GSM-based management and safety reporting service, has resulted in plans for installations in other parts of Camden including for the Education and Health & Safety departments.
In addition, the , through its monitoring sensors and communications system, will provide Camden with immediate information enabling them to constantly:
- Monitor and log gas pressure, a statutory requirement as a bulk gas supplier/transporter;
- Monitor cold water temperatures to check for temperatures that could encourage the growth of the dangerous legionella pneumophila which leads to the possibility of Legionnaire’s disease - thus reducing the costs of regularly sampling and analysing water in cold water tanks to test for this possibility;
- Monitor and log the amount of gas used at sites enabling immediate calculation of its cost;
- Quickly identify faults and breakdowns in the boiler system;
- Monitor and log water usage
“We have saved over £1million in fuel since we installed the eco-eclipse units into our properties, and it has been a great success for us in helping us to understand and manage our energy requirements. E&ES have also provided us with a consistent after-sales service, helping our teams to get the most out of the system.”
