Leonard Cheshire Disability is the UK’s largest voluntary sector provider of services to disabled people.
The charity operates nearly 100 residential services in the UK, providing support for a wide range of
clients including people with physical and sensory impairments, people with learning disabilities, children,
older people and people with an acquired brain injury.
The charity has recently set up a group within its property division to investigate ways to save energy
within its property portfolio. Following an approach to this group by Energy & Environmental Systems
Limited (E&ES), Leonard Cheshire Disability chose to trial the eco-eclipse boiler energy management
system in its Heatherley service in Copthorne, near Crawley in Sussex.
Heatherley is a residential service with 40 rooms in a rural location, providing services for physically
disabled adults. The site consists of the main house, with communal rooms, nursing quarters, relatives’
rooms, activity areas and dining rooms; and two ground-floor only wings which contain the residents’
bedrooms. The main house and both wings are each heated by a separate boiler system. All the boilers are
oil fired. E&ES trialled the eco-eclipse in the main house.
Following a month-long ‘day-on, day-off’ trial, the eco-eclipse system recorded savings of 25.3%. After
the success of this test, Leonard Cheshire Disability asked E&ES Ltd to install the eco-eclipse system to
manage the other two boilers in Heatherley, and to survey a significant number of other sites across the UK
to identify which would be suitable for eco-eclipse installation.
As a result of this nationwide site survey Leonard Cheshire Disability commissioned E&ES to install
the eco-eclipse in a further 13 of the charity’s sites, taking the total number of eco-eclipse systems
installed to 17. E&ES estimate the installation programme will save an average of 19.6% in fuel costs,
with payback achieved over an average 16 months.
“Through the trial at Heatherley, the eco-eclipse has proven its ability to save Leonard Cheshire
Disability significant amounts of fuel, and therefore noticeably reduce our carbon footprint. E&ES’s site
survey service to identify further properties in our portfolio where the eco-eclipse would be effective
(and those where it would have no benefit) provided excellent added value. We are very pleased to be
extending the eco-eclipse’s fuel, money and energy saving benefits to a number of other residential
services in our portfolio.”
